Requiescat
Briton Riviere, 1888Fine art reproduction on 200gsm matte paper. A5 to A1, plus 12x16, 18x24 and 24x36 inches.A knight lies at rest. His bloodhound will not leave him.
Briton Riviere painted Requiescat in 1888. A knight in full armour lies on his bier, hands folded, while his bloodhound stands beside him and gazes at his face. The title comes from the prayer for the dead: requiescat in pace, may he rest in peace.
Riviere was the great animal painter of Victorian Britain, famous for capturing loyalty and grief in a dog's expression. Requiescat was shown at the Royal Academy in 1888 and now hangs in the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney.
The look
Steel armour, a dark stone chamber and the warm red-brown of the hound. Still, quiet and full of feeling. Medieval artwork with a strong centre, suited to a dark academia study, library or hallway.
