Wanderer above the Sea of Fog
Caspar David Friedrich, c. 1817-18Fine art reproduction on 200gsm matte paper. A5 to A1, plus 12x16, 18x24 and 24x36 inches.A lone figure stands on a rock above a sea of cloud. The view never existed.
Caspar David Friedrich painted Wanderer above the Sea of Fog around 1818. A man in a dark coat stands with his back to us on a rocky summit, looking out over mist and distant peaks.
Friedrich built the landscape in his studio from sketches of real mountains, combining them into a scene no one could ever stand in. It became the defining image of German Romanticism. The original hangs in the Hamburger Kunsthalle.
The look
Misty blues, soft greys and the dark silhouette of the wanderer. Vast, calm and contemplative. Dark romanticism wall art suited to a dark academia study, office or living room.
