Frank Dicksee painted La Belle Dame sans Merci in 1902, from the ballad by John Keats. A knight on horseback leans towards a mysterious lady in the woods, already falling under her spell. Only the withered leaves around them hint at what comes next.
In Keats's poem, the knight wakes alone on a cold hillside, haunted by the pale kings and warriors she enchanted before him. Dicksee showed the painting at the Royal Academy in 1902. It now hangs in Bristol Museum and Art Gallery.
The look
Polished armour, autumn woods and the lady's pale gown. Romantic, rich and full of foreboding. Pre Raphaelite wall art suited to a dark academia bedroom, reading room or study.
