László Mednyánszky painted Night Travellers at a Cross around 1880. Small figures pause beneath towering trees at a lonely roadside cross, the forest around them lit by cold moonlight.
Mednyánszky was a Hungarian baron who chose a wandering life, painting forests, vagrants and the edges of the world. The original canvas stands 2.4 metres tall and belongs to the Slovak National Gallery.
The look
