Edward Burne-Jones painted The Beguiling of Merlin between 1872 and 1877. Nimue reads from a book of spells while Merlin slumps powerless in a flowering hawthorn tree. In the legend, she seals him inside the tree forever.
Burne-Jones painted Nimue's face from Maria Zambaco, the woman he loved and could not keep. The original hangs in the Lady Lever Art Gallery, Port Sunlight.
