The king cannot rest. A shepherd boy plays the harp at his feet, and for a while the darkness lifts.
Julius Kronberg painted David and Saul in 1885. The story comes from the First Book of Samuel. King Saul is tormented by an evil spirit, and his servants send for a young shepherd who can play the harp. When David plays, the king finds peace. Look closely at the long spear lying beside Saul. Later in the story, Saul hurls a spear at David as he plays.
Kronberg was a Swedish painter who settled in Rome in 1877. He dressed Saul's palace in Assyrian reliefs, rich carpets and gold, and painted the scene twice. His studio still survives, rebuilt at Skansen in Stockholm. This version belongs to Nationalmuseum in Stockholm.
The look
Amber light, deep carpet reds and the dark gold of Saul's tunic. A brooding, theatrical painting full of texture. Moody wall art for a dark academia study, a music room or a hallway, and a natural fit for maximalist decor.
