Adolf Hirémy-Hirschl, 1898Fine art reproduction on 200gsm matte paper. A5 to A1, plus 12x16, 18x24 and 24x36 inches. The dead crowd the riverbank and beg Hermes for passage. Charon's boat is coming.
Adolf Hiremy-Hirschl painted Souls on the Banks of the Acheron in 1898. Hermes, guide of the dead, stands calm and unmoved while the souls of the departed reach for him in despair. Behind them, Charon's boat crosses the river towards the underworld.
In Greek myth, the dead needed a coin to pay Charon. Those without one wandered the banks of the Acheron for a hundred years. The original canvas is over three metres wide and hangs in the Belvedere in Vienna.
The look
Cold grey-blues, pale bodies and a stormy sky. Dramatic, sweeping and full of movement. Greek mythology wall art with real scale, suited to a dark academia living room, study or long hallway wall.
