Saint Sebastian
North Italian School, c. 1700Fine art reproduction on 200gsm matte paper. A5 to A1, plus 12x16, 18x24 and 24x36 inches. His hands are bound above his head and an arrow has passed through his side. Still he lifts his face to the light.
An unnamed painter in northern Italy made this Saint Sebastian around 1700. His name has not survived, and the canvas is catalogued as North Italian School. Look closely at his waist. One arrow has passed clean through, its feathered end showing at the edge of the canvas.
Sebastian was a Roman soldier who kept his Christian faith secret under the emperor Diocletian. When it was discovered he was bound and shot with arrows, then left for dead. He survived, nursed by a widow named Irene. Baroque painters returned to him again and again, as his story let them paint the human body in a sacred setting. He became a protector against plague, and his feast day falls on 20 January.
The look
Warm, glowing skin against a dark green-brown ground, with a band of deep blue drapery at the hips. Dramatic Baroque light falls from above. Moody wall art for a study, bedroom, hallway or living room, and a strong piece of dark academia decor.
