Two young men pose on a windy hilltop at dusk, coats buttoned, hats in hand. Nearly two centuries later, nobody knows who they were.
Édouard Pingret signed and dated this double portrait in 1830. A year later he showed it at the Paris Salon as Portraits of Two Brothers. Their names were never recorded. Look closely at their clothes: high collars, silk cravats and dark double-breasted coats, the height of Paris fashion. One holds a top hat and cane. The other rests a hand on his hip, his hat behind him.
Pingret trained under Jacques-Louis David and received the Legion of Honour in 1831. The original is small, about 41 by 33 cm. It belonged to the New York collectors Charles and Jayne Wrightsman and was sold at Christie's from their collection.
The look
Midnight-blue coats against a pale, stormy sky and a pink glow on the horizon. Elegant, quiet and a little mysterious. Dark academia wall art for a study, a home library or a dressing room, with the polish of library decor.

This painting stops at A2. Above that size the original photograph loses the fine detail of the brushwork, so the shop does not offer it.
Custom sizes on request. Inch sizes have a slightly different shape from A sizes, so the edges trim a little. Size guide
