Anne Vallayer-Coster painted Still Life with Flowers in an Alabaster Vase and Fruit in 1783. A rich bouquet rises from a carved alabaster vase beside a pineapple and fruit, painted with the precision which made her famous.
Vallayer-Coster was one of the few women admitted to the French Royal Academy, and Marie Antoinette was among her patrons. She kept this painting all her life. Lost for almost two centuries, it reappeared at Christie's Paris in 2023 and sold for a record €2.58 million. It now belongs to the National Gallery of Art, Washington.
