Death on the Pale Horse
Gustave Doré, 1866Fine art reproduction on 200gsm matte paper. A5 to A1, plus 12x16, 18x24 and 24x36 inches."And I looked, and behold a pale horse: and his name that sat on him was Death." Revelation 6:8
Gustave Doré designed Death on the Pale Horse for his illustrated Bible, published in Tours in 1866 with 241 wood engravings. It shows the fourth horseman of the Apocalypse from the Book of Revelation. Death rides out of the night on a pale horse, his scythe swinging low, while winged demons pour through the sky behind him.
Look closely at the bottom corners. Doré's signature sits at the left, and at the right you will find H. Pisan, the name of Héliodore Pisan, one of the master engravers who cut Doré's drawings into the woodblocks. The Bible made Doré famous across Europe, and this vision of Death became one of his best known images.
The look
Silver white on velvet black, with storm clouds rolling beneath the horse. Stark, dramatic and unforgettable. Gothic wall art for a study, a library or a hallway, and a centrepiece for dark academia decor.
